Participants will create their own ceramic tiles to become part of the new 29 Palms Freedom Plaza Tile Mural, a large-scale community artwork being created for Freedom Plaza in downtown Twentynine Palms.
During the workshop, participants will learn basic hand-building techniques, including rolling clay into slabs, cutting and shaping tiles, carving designs into the surface, and building raised relief elements. Each participant will create a one-of-a-kind tile that will become part of the finished mural.
The workshops are presented by Groundwork Arts and Joshua Tree Living Arts and will take place at the Knotts Sky Park Building, 6897 El Sol Avenue, Twentynine Palms, in the building just south of the playground.
Two free workshops will be offered on Saturday:
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM or 2:00 – 4:00 PM
The workshops are open to 29 Palms residents of all ages. Children are welcome; adult assistance is recommended for children ages 5 and younger. No previous art or ceramics experience is needed.
The Freedom Plaza Tile Mural will bring together hundreds of handmade tiles created by students, families, veterans, artists and neighbors. The finished mural will become a permanent part of Freedom Plaza—a public artwork made by the community, for the community, reflecting the people, landscape and character of Twentynine Palms.
